Scammers Piggyback on NC Lottery

Monday, March 07, 2011

Lottery players beware: Your odds of losing are 100% if you fall for this scam. The email claims to be from the Winning Notification Team at the NC Education Lottery. It offers a prize of “US$200,000.” To claim your money, you just need to contact a claims agent and provide some personal information.

In truth, you haven’t won a dime. There is no Winning Notification Team at the NC Education Lottery, the real lottery doesn’t notify winners by e-mail, and never asks winners to provide personal information in order to receive a prize.

These scammers just want to trick you into giving up your personal information.  The email also includes a link to a recent news story about a lottery winner to make the message seem legitimate, but there’s nothing legitimate about this scheme.

If you spot a sweepstakes or lottery scam, report it to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or filing a complaint online at ncdoj.gov. You can also get tips on lotteries and sweepstakes, and learn more ways to keep your money and information safe.
