Important Information about Shredding Events

Why?

Help protect yourself from identity theft by shredding pre-approved credit card offers, old bills, out-of-date account statements and other personal documents that include confidential information.

Shred-a-thons are a perfect way to destroy old tax records, checks, employment records, credit applications or other documents that contain confidential information.

(You must remove papers from 3-ring binders but you do not need to remove staples or paper clips.)

When?

Although they can take place any time most shredding events occur in April, May, September and October, so those are the months you are most likely to find an event scheduled in your area. Very few shredding events take place during the winter months.

Who?

Most shredding events are sponsored by credit unions and municipalities (towns, cities and counties.)

On this website the NC Department of Justice lists the shredding events that it is aware of, but the Department of Justice does not sponsor shredding events listed here.

What?

Unless otherwise noted by the sponsor on their website, shredding events are “personal documents only” – no business or commercial shredding. Businesses or individuals with large quantities of documents should contact a shredding company for assistance.

Most shredding events are also “paper only”. Batteries, electronics and other items that could damage a shred truck are prohibited.

However, some shreds take place in conjunction with events where other materials are accepted for recycling, or with prescription drugs take-back events. See the particular event’s website for more information.

How much?

Sponsors of some shredding events place limits on the number of boxes or bags of documents you can bring for shredding. Check the website of the event to see if there are limits for that particular event. (Note: Some sponsors prohibit plastic bags. Again, check the event’s website)

Remember:

Always check with the local sponsors for details and event updates.

Shredding events may end early due to severe weather or if the shredding truck gets filled up.

If a document doesn’t contain personal/confidential information, don’t shred it – recycle it!

For Sponsors:

If you are sponsoring a shred-a-thon and you would like to have it listed here, send an email to alerts@ncdoj.gov. In the Subject Field of the email enter “Our Shredding Event" and in the body of the message list the date/time and physical address of your event.

In order for your event to be posted, you must also include a URL (web address) where people can go for details about your event, including any limits on the number of boxes of material, etc.

This can be a web page, a flyer that is posted online, or even a Facebook posting as long as it includes everything people need to know before coming to your shredding event.
