AG Stein Leads Effort to Return Prescription Drug Settlement Money to North Carolina

RALEIGH, NC – AG Stein led a group of 51 state attorneys general in urging the U.S. Senate Finance Committee chair and ranking member to introduce legislation that would allow the federal government to return prescription drug settlement money to the states.

Medicare Part D, a prescription drug benefit for individuals covered by both the Medicare and Medicaid programs, is paid for by the federal government and the states. Over the last 10 years, the federal government has recovered tens of millions of dollars in pharmaceutical fraud settlements involving Part D drugs. The states have never received a share in any of the money.

“North Carolina is paying in to Medicare Part D benefits – and has for years,” said AG Stein. “But federal law unfairly deprives us of any of our money recovered from fraud settlements. This is not right. I am proud to have led this multi-state, bi-partisan effort, along with Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.”

Attorneys general in 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico signed the letter. It can be found here.
