SBI reaches settlements in two cases
Release date: 8/12/2013
Raleigh: The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has reached settlements in cases brought by Floyd Brown and Greg Taylor, the NC Department of Justice said today.
“The SBI and other law enforcement agencies now have better interrogation methods and lab reporting practices than were used in the 1990s when the incidents at issue in these lawsuits occurred,” Cooper said. “It was in the best interest of the state to settle these cases.”
The State Crime Laboratory had undergone extensive scientific and legal review and made several changes to strengthen the Lab’s work since the issues raised in the 1993 criminal case against Taylor came to light. Under its new director, the State Crime Lab recently achieved accreditation under ISO 17025, tough new international standards that provide a global basis for laboratory accreditation in management and technical requirements.
Insurance pays all but $500,000 in the Brown case, and all but $100,000 in the Taylor case.
