Statement from Attorney General Cooper on Mecklenburg County officer-involved shooting case
Release date: 9/19/2013
“This case is clearly a tragedy and we will work to bring it to a just resolution. We have accepted the Mecklenburg District Attorney’s request to take over the prosecution of this case today. Attorneys in our Special Prosecutions unit will handle its progress through the court system, and State Bureau of Investigation agents will conduct an independent investigation.”
At the request of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney, Special Prosecutors in the Attorney General’s Office have agreed to handle the case of Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Officer Randall Kerrick.
The Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Section is available to all District Attorneys in the state when there is a conflict or when there are other issues that prevent a District Attorney from handling a case.
