Domestic Violence Statistics

The Attorney General’s Office provides annual statistics on domestic violence related homicides in North Carolina.

North Carolina General Statute 114-2.7 directs all state and local law enforcement agencies to report specific information on domestic violence related homicides to the Attorney General’s Office. The State Bureau of Investigation receives this information from law enforcement agencies and compiles annual statistics on domestic violence murders.

A murder is classified as domestic violence related when the offender and the victim had a personal relationship, as defined by NC General Statute 50B.

Data about these tragic crimes can help policymakers, law enforcement and victims’ advocates understand the scope of the problem and find solutions.

The program began in July of 2007. The first year for which annual statistics are available is 2008.
