As the state's chief law enforcement officer, Attorney General Roy Cooper is committed to fighting crime and protecting the people of North Carolina.

Within the Department of Justice:

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) assists local law enforcement agencies in identifying criminals, analyzing evidence, and preparing evidence for use in court.
The North Carolina Justice Academy, located in Edneyville and Salemburg, develops and conducts training courses for local and state law enforcement professionals.
The Attorney General's Office administers programs related to training and standards for law enforcement officers through the Sheriffs' Standards and Criminal Justice Training and Standards commissions.
The Attorney General's Office administers programs related to the training, standards and licensing for private security, private investigators and other related professions through the Private Protective Services Board and burglar alarm businesses through the Alarm Systems Licensing Board.
The Law Enforcement Liaison Section provides legal guidance and technical assistance to state and local law enforcement agencies and serves as legal counsel to the various Training and Standards commissions, the SBI's Division of Criminal Information, the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission, and the North Carolina Company Police Program. This section also includes the Medicaid Investigations Unit.
