Child Abuse

Researchers have repeatedly documented a cycle of crime and violence associated with child abuse. Abused children are more likely to become involved in crime and drugs and to drop out of school. Parents who were abused as children are six times more likely to abuse their own children. An abusive childhood can predispose someone to violence later in life.

Victims and Citizens Services tries to help break the cycle of child abuse and to make a difference in the lives of abused children. Our Child Victim Assistance Program helps children who are the victims of abuse navigate the court system and bring their abuser to justice.

North Carolina law requires residents convicted of a sexual offense, including sexual offenses against children, to register with their local Sheriff. The SBI's Division of Criminal Information maintains this information in a searchable Sex Offender Registry.

To help child victims who may have to go to court, we also developed Cosmo Goes to Court, a coloring/activity to help children understand our court system. To obtain copies of Cosmo Goes to Court contact Victims and Citizens Services.
